Is feeling pity or feeling sorry normal?

If you don’t have pity for yourself, you won’t feel pity for anyone else. For instance, if you feel sorry for helpless kittens, it’s a sign that deep down, you have pity for yourself, and that emotion can profoundly affect you.

Carlos Castaneda wrote that if you are seeking knowledge, it’s akin to going to war. And when you’re at war, there’s no room for these kinds of indulgences.

Of course, there are reasonable limits—you wouldn’t harm those kittens. Sure, they’re figuring out the world, but that doesn’t mean you need to intervene. So, I refer you back to Castaneda—read what he says about self-pity.
