Common Mistakes in Meditation and How to Fix Them

The first and most common mistake in meditation is the desire to "feel" something. You sit down expecting to immediately experience sensations like a surge of energy, the opening of chakras, love, or an energy flow. As soon as you begin, you focus all your energy on feeling something, or if you catch a brief sensation, you start chasing it.

However, meditation is not about chasing sensations. Let go of the need to feel something—it’s not the purpose of meditation.

The second mistake is the desire to develop energy vision. Instead of sitting calmly, you focus intently on your closed eyes or a point in the center of your forehead, trying to "see" chakras, auras, or colors. You grab onto any images you notice and strain to hold your attention there.

But focusing on this kind of vision will only take you further from the true purpose of meditation. In the pursuit of seeing something, you can lose yourself—forgetting who you are, why you're meditating, and what you’re actually seeking.

Another mistake is attempting to sit in the lotus position without proper preparation. This can be problematic, especially for beginners or for those who don’t practice yoga or regular stretching. Without proper training, you risk injuring your knees or ankles, and your legs will likely go numb within minutes—making it impossible to focus on meditation.

So, what should you do?

For most people, it’s better to meditate while sitting in a chair. Place your feet flat on the floor, parallel to each other, with your back straight. Your hands can rest in your lap or on your knees, palms facing up. This comfortable posture allows energy to flow freely through your body.

Instead of striving for sensations or visions, focus on achieving a state of calm and balance. If images or thoughts arise during meditation, observe them without attachment. Keep a clear mind and sober awareness, simply watching and letting them go.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can deepen your meditation practice and experience its true benefits.
